Gelidonya Wreck Discovered in the went of Antalya, the remains of Gelidonya ship first drew the attention of a sponge diver from Bodrum, Kemal Aras. The scenery seen at the bottom of the sea by Kemal Aras was unusual and different form the other shipwrecks which contained great number of amphorae. Here there were great number of copper and bronze ingots scattered over the rocks and fused with the rocks because of the sea plants. Mr. Aras explained the story to American anthropologist, journalist Peter Thockmorton who eventually persuaded a young student of archaeology to excavate this shipwreck. This was how George Bass, "the father of Underwater archaeology" started his long and brilliant career. Arriving to the site, Bass and his team understand that there was no ship hull but great number of ox hide shaped ingots, ships main cargo. From the finds discovered, the archaeologist could make the story of the ships journey. The ship started its journey at Syria (cylindrical seals from Syria) and called at Cyprus ( lambs with Cyprus origin) and headed for southern Turkey where it hit the rocks and sank near Gelidonya.
